Description
This is an auction for an original 18th century Wax Seal of Joseph II (1741-1790), Holy Roman Emperor, ARCHDUKE of Austria. This 240+ year old seal features the Coat of Arms for the HABSBURG Monarchy, which resembles the emblem for the largest country ever, TARTARIA. Both the griffins and the double headed eagles were also used by the country of Tartaria. Some of the abbreviations found in the surrounding text are, DUX (Duke), BOH (Bohemia), ARCH AUST (Archduke of Austria), DUXBURG (Archduke of Burgandy), RISA (Emperor of the Romans), GER (Germany), REX (Royalty), LOTH (Lothringen). The text starts off, IOSEPHIIDGEXOMIMPSAGE and so on, very difficult to read. Joseph II was the eldest son of Empress Maria Theresa. The condition is excellent overall, including the wax and the wooden case and rope. If anyone knows the date more exact, please let me know. The seal measures 6 1/4" diameter x 1 1/2 inches thick. The lid is a very tight fit, almost vacuum sealed after putting the 2 sides together. This seal was found in Northern California about 14 years ago. Email with any questions or answers.
